Post subject: | 8mm: Preservation, Diseases and treatments |
Dear folks: First of all, sorry about my English, cause it is not my mother tongue. I have a collection of old 8mm films and, presently, I am trying to save it through two lines of action: 1) preservation the original media; and, as a desperate measure: 2) digitalization of the content. I have been searching the forum, looking for topics about old films. I have found useful information, but I couldn’t find some addressing all the subject. So I decided to propose three on 8mm: Preservation, Diseases and Treatments, b) Digitalization Services, and c) Digitalization Equipment. This is the firs one: 8mm: Preservation, Diseases and treatments Every comment will be welcome. 1. Disease: brittleness. Treatment: I have heard about ‘replastification’ and the Liquid Film Plasticiser (LFP), made by Peter Goed, from Queensland, Australia. I have asked him, but I didn’t succeed: he is retired and couldn’t give any information. So, does anyone have any information about LFP? I also heard about pure camphor, but: What? When? How? I don’t know. 2. Disease: bent/crook. Treatment: maybe FilmRenew (slow drying) FilmGuard (very slow drying) and fast drying products? 3. Disease: dirt. Treatment: same as above plus tetrachlorethylene. 4. Disease: shrinkage. Treatment: unknown. 5. Disease: film stuck together. Treatment: I have heard about vapor of acetone for a few hours (delicate and dangerous). 6. Disease: rust. Treatment: unknown |
