One never sees the name Solvon mentioned in discussions about film cleaners or lubricants; I wondered how many members have used it. I bought a 100ml bottle, that has just used up, and now am awaiting delivery of a full sized tin. I wrote to the manufacturers some time back to get a few details; it's a one off treatment; comes in two types, type 1, cleaner only, and type 2, a cleaner/ lubricant. You have to use type 1 if you want to remove type 2, for splicing. I have been very pleased with the results; even though I overwet the cloth you don't see anything on the film, unlike the 2.22 that I used previously, and which is no longer available. I have only used it on 16mm prints, and it runs much quieter through the projector, and appears to improve the sharpness of the image. Available from Urbanski, and Van Eck Video. It's not a cheap product, and if living outside the U.S. seems to add another £20 in customs charges. But worth the money I think. |

I just bought my first can of Solvon, and know at least one collector who has been using the product for several years with good results. Not sure what you mean by having to "use type 1 to remove type 2 for splicing" though. My friend and I both bought "type 2"; I generally splice my films with cement, my pal in Minnesota always splices with Presstape, and neither of us have had any problems with splicing cleaned films. Solvon seems to be a pretty good replacement for Ecco, Renovex, Kodak and similar quick-drying cleaners. If I overwet the cloth, I slow down winding and tilt the film in my hand just a little so I can see the "sheen" of the liquid evaporate on the film surface before it reaches the rewind reel (I typically clean my films tail-to-head.) |

It was the manufacturer who told me that if I wanted to remove it from the film, I would need to use type 1. |

Did a little online research into this; the manufacturer is undoubtedly right that the non-lubricating "type 1" will remove the lubricating "type 2," after all, it's the same solvent without the added lubricant. But the lubricating agent in "type 2" doesn't seem to affect splicing the films either; I suspect it's a small amount of some kind of powdered wax similar to what was added to past cleaners like Ecco or Renovex. (I also believe Filmrenew contains some as well.) This is as opposed to professionally applied coatings like 3M Photogard, which can not be removed and makes tape splicing necessary as cement will neither penetrate nor stick to the coating. |

I received my tin of Solvon today. Some products previously available were discontinued because of so called damage to the Ozone layer. What I didn't expect to read on the back was that this product contains cancer causing agents. I think if it were known in the right quarters, this product would be banned in Europe.
