A new one for me

I bought a film on ebay from prcfilm. It came in a plastic case and you could smell something thru the case. I opened it and got a burst of musty, vinegar and some kind of solvent. Kind of like pine or evergreen. There was a folded newspaper in the bottom of the can that really smelled of both. After unrolling the film it was oily/blotchy all the way thru. I mean you could wipe the film with a cloth and see it on the cloth after 12 inches. I have that familiar feeling again. [set5_b/set5_b/banghead.gif]

My wife says she smells chemical but not pine, some kind of aroma like a cleaner.

Mike,

Is this a VS print which somebody has treated with Filmrenew or some such?
Did the auction say the print had VS?
Who is prcfilm?

...and there is a definite vinegar smell? Not just the solvent?

VS all the way. I let someone smell it that had never heard of VS and he said vinegar. There is a solvent smell along with it. The oily/slippery stuff on the film has me guessing. Its not filmrenew because I have some of that and compared.

I should have said musty/vinegar and weird was the exact terms to describe the smell by others.

I say contact the seller immediately and explain the situation. Cliff Thomas has been selling for ages, even back in the old Big Reel days, and I would hope he takes care of the matter at once and without hassle for you. Keep us posted.

He refunded the price of the film and told me to keep it. I just wonder why try to cover up problems with that stuff thats on it. I understand he has been a seller for a long time. Oh well I have another VS print.
