I was hoping you could give me an idea about this motor on my Kodak Sound 8 projector. I was in the process of trying to quieten down the projector when I broke the blower fan. After replacing the fan the motor stop working. All I get is buzzing sound and the motor stopped turning. It will turn freely when it is turned off and I give a spin with my hand, but when I apply voltage it buzzes and does not want to turn even if I manually turn it. Below are some pics of the motor(disassembled. Also are a couple of pics of a part that I would like to identify. Both mystery part photos are the same part.

Dan, that is a 5 Ohm ceramic capacitor. Not sure the voltage it is recieving but at 5 it may be a 120V capacitor. Either 12 or 120V could probably be found online. Would most likely be a can style capacitor since they don't make them in that style anymore. Have you checked continuity of the part? If it is still charging and discharging then it isn't the problem.

Dan, faux paue,
Made a mistake, that is a 5 Ohm Resister probably wirewound. Most of them available right now are either carbon based or there are some still wirewound in other countries. Again, check the continuity of the part but with Ohm's it has to be a resister. If you have continuity then it should be about 1/3 of the voltage tested. If the continuity is broken then you have a broken part and it can be replaced. My fault for thinking it was a capacitor. You should be getting about 12v AC.

Confirmed!

What you are seeing is a wirewound power resistor. These are among the most indestructable of electronic components, so short of seeing a crack clear through it, it's probably OK. If it happens to be dead, it's going to be open circuited.

I can help you find a replacement resistor if it comes to that. We know the value, and we can figure out the power rating by the size.

Is the fan replaced of the same voltage rating as the original? If it's of a lower rating maybe it's drawing a lot of current and loading down the motor voltage. Does the motor come back to life if you disconnect the fan?

Steve and Erik, thanks for the replies. The new fan is exactly the same as the old one. Even has the same name and numbers. See pic below. I tried running the motor without the fan attached and it will not turn. I also tried running the motor outside of the projector and it still would no turn. It only makes a buzzing sound and will not turn when I try to turn it with my hand. When the voltage is not applied i can spin it around with my hand. The resistor is 2 inches long with a 5/16th sleeve.

Ohhhhh!!!

THAT kind of fan!

I thought we were talking an electric fan.

I think it's the motor itself.

Steve, do you think the motor is done for?

I don't understand electric motors as much as I used to (been a while...), but to me it doesn't sound very promising.

One thing: what does the ratings plate on the motor say? For example if it's a DC motor and somehow AC is being applied to it all it will do is buzz since 60 times a second it's changing its mind about which direction it's supposed to turn.

If the right voltage and waveform is being applied and it's not doing what it's supposed to then it has to be the motor.

Steve, I looked on the motor and there are no letters or numbers. The schematic is stapled in side the projector. i could provide a scan. I'm a mechanical repair person and and am not good at electronics.

I tried photographing the schematic in the case. I think the motor is 117volts 60cycles.
