There is a discussion going on in the other forum, as it is known, about which is the best version of Dicken's Christmas Carol, many prefer the 1951 version with Alastair Sim, and others the George C. Scott version; didn't Albert Finney do one as well, no one mentioned this. Like many others I bought the Alastair Sim version and thought it couldn't be bettered, but then I saw the 1938 version with Reginald Owen and thought this slightly better. Modern DVD releases have been spoilt by colorisation. For those who haven't seen the earlier British version starring Sir Seymour Hicks, I wouldn't bother.

My favourite version is the MGM version. I think that Reginald Owen is a fantastic scrooge.

I have a 16mm print of the Seymour Hicks version, and personally speaking, I find it OK.

I'm probably one of the few who thinks the Sim version overrated.

Hi Mick, yes, I think Reginald Owen made a fantastic Scrooge. My father first told me about the Seymour Hicks version, and I picked it up on DVD a few years ago. I wasn't too impressed, but maybe I should dig it out and give it an airing, I might feel differently second time around.

This is one I never embraced as a Christmas favorite, and through no fault of the content. I am certainly not criticizing the millions who love this wonderful and classic story of redemption, but when I was a little boy it scared the hell out of me and I've been unenthused about it ever since. My grandparents raised me and they had a black and white tv set back in the 50s. One of the filmed versions was playing on the tube one evening and I was allowed to watch the program. I have no idea or recall of which version it was, it could even have been the Basil Rathbone tv adaptation for all I remember. I must have been about 5. The progression of the story became more and more terrifying to me with each scene. I had no time for ghosts that came into your bedroom at night and woke you and flew you to a cemetery. uh uh. It was not fun. My grandmother gave an illustrated book of the story, but the image of a doorknob with a human face speaking was too much. What a chicken. I a few years I would regularly watch the Universal horror classics on "Shock Theatre" with no sweat, but as the years passed I can't say I ever again watched a complete version of "A Christmas Carol". I did buy a dvd of the George C. Scott version a few years ago, but it still has the shrink wrap on it.

I shall, indeed, be running the Hicks version this very Friday night for the family.
