I got this 2 days ago. It's only 50 feet in length. The narrator takes you very quickly through the procedure of lacing a Bell & Howell projector. You have to be able to lace the film first before you can watch the instructions on how to do it. What was interesting to me is that this film has both optical and magnetic soundtracks.

Hi Robert,

I wonder how these were made available back in the day? I would assume they were not give away free with each new machine. Any idea?

I don't know Mick; 16mm projectors were expensive, so they could afford to give a short film. When I bought my Eumig in the 70s it came with about 25 feet of blank film, the object was so that you could hear the quality of the recording on the soundtrack; it was African Beat by Bert Kaempfert.

True.

However, as you said above, it would seem a bit silly to include a film on how to thread the projector, which, in order to view it, one would already have to have threaded it!!
:D

Interesting--first I heard the expression "lacing" the film. (And I too see the humor of this reel...to learn how to thread (lace) the projector, thread this film and watch how.) I suspect it was an group instructional film, perhaps for teachers, on how to run the new machines.

Is this related to threading of a specific B&H machine? I'm guessing it must be.

I agree. Otherwise it would be a catch 22. You know, only a film collector would get a kick out of watching this film. [set5_b/set5_b/hat.gif]

It might be for one specific projector, although it would do for any manual threader.

[set5_b/set5_b/iagree.gif] [set5_b/set5_b/iamwithstupid.gif] Had to be for teaching purposes. Buying a fleet of projectors was a huge investment for a school so it would make perfect sense to teach the teachers in a large group setting on how to operate the equipment.

side note: I have many memories of teachers who skipped training day! [set5_b/set5_b/willy_nilly.gif]
