Full-coat magnetic film, both 16 and 35mm, was used for "double system" sound recording, where the sound was recorded separately for later editing and mixing. "Single system" sound, where the sound was recorded inside the camera on "striped" film, was used almost exclusively for TV news filming; sort of a "quick and dirty" recording method. 35mm (and even 70mm) full-coat was also used in the 1960's and 70's for recording audiophile stereo LPS, like Enoch Light's Command Records label.

In the early 1980s there were tons of "airline prints" of near current releases on mylar with mag tracks.. and with the customary optical track in English. These prints were excellent originals and the mag track was foreign depending on which airline used the print. I just sold a "Vertigo" whose mag track was spanish. Unfortunately many of these prints had footage that got scratched up when the projector jammed... being mylar the film never broke but if threaded poorly could run the entire footage making the same scratches through out.

I just came across this old post. Interesting that Erik is no longer here. Did he get bounced? He is now a member of 16mmfilmtalk forum. I could not believe his ignorance regarding mag/opt 16mm projectors. I have an Ampro 477, a B&H 302L, a B&H 302C a Viewlex JAN, a Bolex S321, a Bolex S221 and did have a Kodak Pageant. All have the mag/opt capability.

Barry,

At one point that guy accused me of spreading talk that optical sound on 16mm did not exist and that mag sound was the only way on 16mm!!

I can understand his confusion. You see, magnetic 16mm was never made available in his part of Indiana.

Several magnetic sound Bell & Howell models come to mind:

202 (the very first Bell & Howell to feature magnetic sound, made in 1952 & 1953)
302 (made in 1955 through 1958)
8302 (made in mid 1960's)
Some models of the TQ1 (made in the 1960's).
Some models of the TQ2 (made in the 1970's).
Some models of the TQ3 (made in the 1980's).

Many of the JAN models featured magnetic sound.
