Firstly thank you for the invitation to come and join the forum and as some of you will know I love nothing more than enthusing about reel film, or should that be real film?

The Eumig 807D was in fact my first real sound cine projector which I purchased shortly after they first became available around 1974. Previous to this I had used other machines of much lesser quality and certainly nothing up to the standard of the machine which even now I still own with great pride and fond memories of my youth using it at Cine Clubs/Societies I had belonged to way back then. As the years tick past and factors affect our lives there is one thing that has always been there, my little black and white Eumig 807D.

These Eumigs came in a red box with protective inner polystyrene packing and a good selection of basic accessories. As a young lad my mouth watered at the prospect of owning the additional items which were available at the end of the instruction manual including the Eumig sound FX record or the special black protective cover and in later years I was fortunate to purchase and make good use of the FX record for my own home movies. Talking of instruction manuals I always found the book of words easy to follow and the 807D was no different than any other thankfully for a youngster like me at the time.

The spec.
With this new machine Eumig had reached new heights with the featured new amplifier design delivering 6 watts of audio power, more than enough for your average living room. Sound from magnetic stripe recorded was also of a greater quality on this machine with Eumig quick to publicise its 75-10,000Hz frequency range capabilities and this all made for a better show in the end. It was not short of good basic recording facilities either and also had a manual recording level control as well as the usual commentary over dub knob for building sound tracks, plus a well featured line up of Mike/Lin inputs and the valuable line output socket for external amplification. But this machine was not just any 8mm projector it could handle Standard 8mm or Super 8mm film with a simple switch of a few interchangeable parts and I certainly made good use of both gauges. Another plus was the 18 to 24fps projection speed control which was completely variable within that range, but if you removed the back and flicked to 60Hz you could slow it down even further making it ideal for cine to video transfers without flicker. In short then, these were robust and a fairly simple to use sound projector which quickly gained the name ‘The Work Horse’ and amazingly 37 years on mine is still going strong when I recall I used to run it virtually every evening for a good few years either showing commercial films or completing my home movies.

Longevity.
In my opinion the Austrian company Eumig made the most solid of machines with simple design in this case and for all the right reasons as proven with my 807D it’s still working perfectly. It has to be said that I have lovingly cared for this projector when some may not have quite so loved, but it has stood the test of time when other makes have failed.

Short comings.
The only down side today with the 807D for me would be the relatively poor lens fitted and I expect largely dictated by the selling price. You could criticize not being able to part way unthread a film, but if your films are in good order would you expect a problem needing to unthread part way projected?

Yes I love my little Eumig 807D ‘Sound projector for all 8mm gauges’ and my guess is it will still be going when I land in my pine box. A little later I’ll add some photos and a video clip of it in operation so you can see it in all its working glory.

Main features

World wide variable mains voltage 50/60Hz
600ft spool capacity
Volume/Trick recording/manual rec level possible
2X Din in out sockets and one external speaker out

One thing I meant to add to this was one of my experiences using the 807D. During the latter 1970’s I used to go out giving presentations of the amateur films I had made showing them to anyone who was willing to watch. Looking back the funny part was my mobile Cinema consisted of a Honda moped on which I used to strap the Eumig box between me and the rear top box which contained the films and cables. A speaker between my legs and over my shoulder I had strapped a 5ft screen and I must have been a funny sight to behold with all that little lot on a 50cc moped. I travelled far and wide giving my film shows in all weathers speeding along at 30 miles per hour and even slower when attempting a hill and the little Eumig 807D never let me down once. I still have the projector and all the memories but the moped eventually was upgraded a number of times.

I have to reply on this. Just this week recieved the same machine from John Capazzo. It is really wonderful to be able to switch from super to reg 8mm all sound. Have been holding several reg 8 sound prints for years and my super 8 broke down for the final time years ago. That was when I sold off most of my collection. Lately I have had money to spend and when John had a Eumig I jumped on it thankfully. It is the projector for collectors and was so much easier than I expected to change out from one format to the other. Everything is compact and easy to use and I agree, the lense even though is zoom isn't all that accurate with the focus knob. If you change the zoom size though you can usually nail the picture and see every grain in the picture. The sound is also spot on and the sound on both formats is excellent. If you can find it and need something for reg 8 this is the projector to have. Also John sold it to me at a really decent price.

Just showed a super 8 print on my machine tonight. The Eumig (I have an 807 D) is so easy to switch between formats and has such a steady image that this is the machine you need if you want to go back and forth. I am now into the reg 8 sound prints available on the market but with my super 8 I'd only trust this machine. An 810 D has better audio options but for me, the 807 is more than enough. Handles 600' reels and the image is very good. Sound on both formats is also wonderful. If you can find it at a good price then buy one. You'll never regret it.
