Hi everybody,

Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho was released on super 8 by Castle Films:

Castle Films was eventually bought out by Universal and changed it's name to Universal 8.
The 8mm edition of Psycho was re-released by Universal 8:

Now, I was wondering if there is any content difference between these two editions? Or do they both contain the same scenes?
And does anybody know if the complete movie is also available on super 8 (in multiple reels)?

Thanks! [set5_b/set5_b/cheers2.gif]

Carlos, I have the U 8 version which is a real crowd pleaser. I would like to find the Castle edition too. The feature is available on standard 8, but I haven't seen it on super 8. If it is on super 8 I am sure someone will chime in.

I have a few Universal 8 features after they switched from Castle. In my collection the films I have are totally complete. Don't know if Psycho was released in super 8 but have no idea why it wouldn't have been. I have a couple copies of Night of the Living Dead here under Universal 8 and sent out a partial copy but they were complete. It may take a bit of searching but I would say it was released at some time by Universal 8. Have you checked under Ken Films also? They didn't release a lot of B&W films but they did produce the classics for a short time in full feature.

One primary difference between the Castle and Universal-8 versions of PSYCHO is that the Castle edition ran only about 7 minutes and was mounted on a 200' reel; while the Universal ran about 17 minutes on a 400' reel. (This is in Super 8; the 16mm versions were respectively on 400' and 800' reels.) To my recollection, the Universal edition contained all the same scenes as the Castle; plus of course a good deal more of the story due to its longer running time.)

U-8 also released the shower sequence only on a Super 8 100' reel. The Castle and Universal short versions of Hitchcock's FRENZY though are a different story. While adding a number of sequences, Universal's editor actually left out the scene in which the detective figures out "who done it!" I patched the scene from my Castle print into my U-8 and found it quite an improvement. [set5_b/set5_b/svengo.gif]

Made a mistake, I thought you were talking about the full feature print not a cutdown. Niles and Castle-Universal 8 had full-length feature prints released both on super and regular 8 film. Neither versions seem to be missing any scenes. As far as the shorts, I haven't looked at them.

Universal 8 did feature releases? I never knew this. Which titles did they release?

Hey Mike. The first Universal 8 I picked up years ago is Night of the Living Dead on 5 reels super 8. Have had a few others bought and sold over the years. Did have Psycho from Universal 8 but if I remember it was on 4 reels yet complete.

Eric,

Since you mentioned the U8 features I've been doing a bit of research. I was surprised that U8 had released features and they do look fairly collectable.
However, other collectors I've spoken to are fairly adamant that NOLD was never released as a U8 feature. Are you certain it was? You say you have a copy which is definitely a Universal 8 release?

I have two full prints of NOTLD still here. I gave an odd first reel away to another collector on here who could verify this but all the complete editions I've had are normally in white or brown unlabled boxes but start with the Universal 8 logo before the feature starts.
