Is there anything around the house that can be used other than alcohol to clean sound heads?

Denatured Alcohol. Use a cue tip. Don't get it on the rubber rollers though.

I usually use alcohol for quick cleaning, however, naptha (Ronsonal lighter fluid) is my choice for a thorough going over of the machine. I also demagnetize the sound heads every year or so as part of the "thorough" cleaning process.

Chris,

How do you go about demagnetizing the heads?

I have a demagnetizer I bought at Radio Shack decades ago--I used it on my reel-to-reel, cassette decks and movie projectors back in the day. It still works and I think it makes a difference in the quality of sound the projector puts out. Again, I do not use this very often, usually once a year or so, depending how much the machine is used. They are readily available on eBay; don't spend more than $10-$15. Here is one similar to mine:

Thanks Chris,

I have a Eumig S910 coming in and it looks pretty dirty on the outside. Doesn't have a power chord so it has not been tested. I have a chord that fits and If it doesn't work I will use it for parts for my S912. On the other hand if it does I want to give the sound heads a good cleaning.
