Does anyone know of anything safe for merely lubing film other than that high dollar stuff?

Hi Roger-- I ONLY use Filmrenew which does a very good job of cleaning and waxes (lubes) the film. I know some collectors use a variety of other stuff including ArmorAll and WD-40, but I would NEVER put any of that stuff on my prints. My Filmrenew lives in a sealed lab can ( to prevent evaporation) and I usually dip the film for a minute or so in the solution to lube it. For cleaning, I let it soak for a week or so. DO NOT put any film in Filmrenew unless it is on a metal reel. It's well worth the investment.

Hi Chris

I have plans to purchase some Filmrenew shortly but just wondered if there was anything that I could use while waiting.

If it is "lubing" you are after, I wouldn't suggest anything other than a product for film. Filmrenew is a popular item...there is also Vita-Film, though some do not like the smell and the seller of the product has some outlandish claims of what the solution is actually capable of doing. [set5_b/set5_b/rofl.gif] There is also Film Guard...it is used a little different than the other cleaner/lubes for film. And those who do not fully understand the product tend to talk it down and make false accusations against it. I have all three products here and I use all three products depending on what I'm doing on that particular film.

For just cleaning film, I have spoke with a few people who use plain NAPHTHA but it offers nothing for the lube side...

What about FilmGuards claim of covering up light scratches. Has anyone witnessed this with there own prints? Can you actuall see an overall difference before and after?

F
Yes. It covers baseside lines which are the ones on the lamp side or back of the film when projecting. If you see baseside lines, apply Film Guard between your set of rewinds, then play the film right away and you not see the lines. You will also notice a pleasant wet gate look. Film Guard is used very sparingly. A bottle with shipping is around $40. It's according to where you buy it. One bottle lasts me somewhere between a one to two years. I use it on 16mm and the 8mm gauges. If you only use it on 8mm, a bottle should last a lot longer.

Hey Dan

Are those the fine white lines that you see when viewing your film?

Hey Dan

You say that FilmGuard runs around $40.00. The cheapest I can find is on ebay and after shipping it's over $47.00. Think someone on the forum might have a piece of a bottle that I might be able to buy resonably? I only have at this time 10 200ft and 7 400ft films.

Roger, I would loan you some, but I am almost out right now. Even if someone had enough to loan you, you would
still need a spray bottle to apply it. If you are going to collect more films, I would suggest investing in a bottle.

Here is the best deal I could find after shopping eBay and Amazon:

I did find a dealer in Nashville that you could contact. Maybe he could give you a better deal:
Jack Roe USA, Inc.

Nashville, TN 37211

Here is all the information you need to know about FilmGuard:
