How often and what should one use to lube their film and what is best to use for wet gate projecting? Also how good is Filmrenew at cleaning and how much lubrication protection does it provide?

Roger, I use only two cleaners, Film Guard and Film Renew. Mostly I use Film Guard because it doesn't have a strong smell. I don't think it is flammable either. Film Renew needs to be used with good ventilation and is flammable. Film Renew is very good for soaking films in a metal lab can for serious cleaning. i.e. vinegar films with warping or curling or films with excess dirt. Film Guard should not be used for soaking! I used Film Guard between rewinds using a soft clean flannel cloth folded several times and sprayed with Film Guard. You can project the film as soon as it is cleaned. It gives a great wet gate look too. Both products come with instruction for use or you can go online and find the instructions.

Not often. Maybe one a year. Be sure and read the directions for application. You don't want to use too much.

Something else I'd like to know. What causes little blotchy spots to pop in and out of the images when you are viewing a film?. I have had two or three older films in the past to have these.

Roger, could you provide a screen shot. Use a digital camera in a dark room without the flash. It could be emulsion scratches.

I no longer have these films but they were just spots with a redish tent that flashed on screen.

I see! Those would not be emulsion scratches. Maybe water damage.

Roger, the red blotches could be "Fuji rot", which I understand is a fungus eating the emulsion and shows up as reddish spots when projected. Or, it could be residue from a "cleaner" that was improperly and heavily applied; I once had a print coated with a red oily substance. A soaking bath in Filmrenew, as Dan suggests, did a good job of removing it.

I did get these from a neighbor who,come to think about it did use some kind of silicone to lube his films. That could have done some damage.
