Hi everyone,

I have an Elmo ST-600 Super 8 projector. I am having some issues with the sound.

First, when I am running any sound film, there is a buzzing sound. The sound of the film can be heard overtop of the buzzing, but it is definitely there. When I run a silent Super 8 film, the buzzing is not present.

Secondly, the sound is slightly off. It is a bit higher pitched than it should be. This occurs on all of the sound film I run on it.

Does anyone have an idea on what I could do about fixing this? Could the two problems be related?

Thanks very much,
Matthew

Matt, when the amp is on and no film is loaded can you hear the buzz when turning up the volume? There should be a very delicate speed pot on the circuit board. If you could send a photo of the circuit board someone should be able to point out the pot. This pot can be adjusted with a small plastic screwdriver in order to speed up or slow down the film in order to make audio pitch adjustments.

This sounds a lot like worn motor brushes. (If you mean you can't hear it with a silent film because the sound is turned off.)

When I had this problem the arcing caused by the worn brushes caused interference that could be picked up on an AM radio anywhere in the house. The frequency of the buzz also followed the 18/24 FPS speed selection.

The bad news is I don't know how to change the brushes: I just swapped in a newer motor.
