I have one of the Silma/Bauer super8/regular8 silent machines that call for a 75 watt halogen lamp. Since the 75 watt is so expensive, I have used the much cheaper 100 watt version for several years with no problems at all. The heat feels the same to me as that produced by the 75 watt lamp. I am aware that the 100 watt bulb takes more amperage than the 75 watt lamp but my transformer does not seem to get hotter as a result. Perhaps in my machine the transformer is over-rated?

It can mean a couple of things:

1) In order to give the thing a longer service life, the designer operates it way underrated so it operates nice and cool. (temperature is a deadly to this kind of stuff.)

2) There was another machine from the same manufacturer that used the 100W lamp and it was cheaper to buy and stock many 100W transformers than smaller bunches of 100W and 75W transformers.

Knowing the durability of Cine equipment I've seen, it could be a little bit of both.

BTW: Are the voltage ratings of the lamps the same?
