Post subject:  Anscovision 388 Projector

Hi, new member here. I have some 8mm and super8 film I'd like to look at so that I may put them in order to have converted to DVD. I found this Anscovison 388 for sale. motor runs in both directions, appropriate drives work in both directions, and bulb lights. when I went to pick it up, I was a little hesitant. I had a funny feeling this was not going to be a good deal.

I bought it. I knew it was a bad deal, no takeup reel with projector. I tried to feed a standard 8mm film through projector, but it would not feed. the metal mechanism that moves back and forth as well as up and down seems to be missing one of the protrusions that feed through the film. can I buy that part and replace it, or am I just dummy for buying something I wasn't sure would work?

the machine runs smoothly with normal projector noise. attached is a pic of the part.

thanks to everyone on this form who help nooby's like me.

Hi Frank and welcome to the Forum!
I think I have a similar Ansco somewhere around here and I'll try to match it up with your photo. That looks like the "gate" area and it appears you're missing a plate that holds the film during projection. If that's it, I may even have the part you need. I'll check.

Chris,
Thanks for the reply. I'm not very familiar with the terminology of the parts. in the photo, the black metal piece in the center of the photo appears to have the lower pin missing at the end of the piece. that's the part that goes back and forth as well as up and down, right? that's what drives the film through the machine. I can take more detailed photos if need be. I hope I can get it working again. many thanks.

Hello Frank, and welcome to the forum. I've never heard of these projectors; is it dual guage, taking both Standard 8 and Super 8. I just have a Eumig dual guage, and you get two sets of sprockets and gate area, which you change according to which guage you wish to run.

Robert,

definitely a dual gauge. there's a slide switch to go from super 8 to 8mm. I think it moves the aperture to differentiate between the two gauges. the film drive pawls work on both gauges ...... I think. I'm not familiar with projectors and their part names.

Chris,

great, I appreciate your effort. besides someone like yourself, how would I find that part? I can't even find repair services or anywhere you can buy parts, not just belts. I guess stock is all gone and only people like yourself are the only possibilities. would a GAF machine work, I heard they're made by the same company.

Thanks,
frank

Chris,
Prior to buying the ansco 388 to complete my mission of screening super 8 and 8mm to sequence for converting to DVD, I was using a friends GAF 2388. the ansco and GAF look very similar internally. I also had problems with the GAF feeding film. that's why I bought the ansco. the GAF does have both claws on the metal arm. perhaps it's out of adjustment. is there a procedure for checking and adjusting the claws on a GAF? that might be the way to go. I would still fix the ansco if I could get the part.

thanks,

frank

UPDATE: GAF 2388Z

attached are three photos. got some excellent advice on how to load the GAF machine. I was doing it all wrong, should have read the manual!!! feed film in gate area with power off, then go to project to show film.

as you can see from the photos, the rubber tire is well worn on the take up reel. my friend happen to have a spare in the box! I changed the rubber wheel, cleaned the mating surface of the hard wheel, and also cleaned extra debris inside unit.

put everything back. I tried to load super8 film the correct way and everything worked for super8.

however, when I tried the 8mm, the film fed properly, but the image was so jittery you could not watch it. the framer had no bearing on stabilizing the image. unfortunately I have more 8mm to screen than super8. I heard there might be an adjustment for these machines on the take up reel tension which may cause the jittery problem. I wish I could get by this last issue with the GAF and I'm home free.

Thanks for everyone who has replied to this post.

thanks
frank
