I'm pretty sure that Derann released this as a feature.

Did another company also release a feature length version? Or, did Derann release two different runs?

Which is the better version?

Hi Mike - sort of half an answer

I have a print of "The Jolson Story" on Super 8 which I am sure is from Derann -though I bought it second hand on ebay here in Australia - 1) the seller advertised it as a Derann print and 2) the leader of the second1600 ft reel has the words Derann Unit 3 on it. Other information is gone from the leaders as the original owner remounted it on the 1200ft Taylor super reels that have a small inner core and take more footage - I couldn't watch it until earlier this year when I bought a take up reel from Steve Osborne.

As to the print - it is lovely low fade colour with great sound - though not as saturated as the Derann prints I have of The Mummy and Dracula - sometimes a bit "pastel like" and a blue tinge to the blacks. Paul Foster had an IB tech 16mm print about a year ago for 299 GBP which although at the way upper limit of what I would pay I am now kicking myself that I didn't buy. The Super 8 print cost me $160 AUD which is currently about $80 GBP so I can't complain. All the best - Guy

Hi Guy,

Thanks for the info.

I would love a 16mm dye transfer of this but, as you say, ...pretty expensive. I'd like to settle on a nice Super 8 print, but I seem to recall reading somewhere that there are other prints besides the Derann, and I'd like to get the best one.

Once again, thanks for your help.

THE JOLSON STORY is a movie I grew up with, watching it countless times on the black and white tv set. I knew every line in the film. About 8 years ago, I was happy to acquire a print in Technicolor and, later that year, another Tech print of JOLSON SINGS AGAIN. They're out there, Mick. I see them on eBay once in a while. By the way, if you'd like me to place a bid for you on that '54 Fender Telecaster at auction Friday night, let me know. I'm thinking maybe $35,000 would do it???

....in my dreams, Chris

Yeah, Ian O'Reilly at Perry's here has a S8 Jolson Story up at £120 at the moment, which sparked my original question.

Are your prints 16mm?

Yes, both prints are 16mm Tech.

A couple years ago Clapton's strat, Blackie, sold in the 900 thousand dollar range at a charity auction. I wonder what CX's Roland keyboard would go for. [set5_b/set5_b/smilielol5.gif]

Now, Dan, mentioning that particular CX keyboard...well, you're getting into the stuff that dreams are made of..you know, like The Maltese Falcon or something.
