While some of the following is simply common sense, it bears repeating based on experiences I have had recently.
1) Securely Tape Down the start of a reel before shipping. This is especially important if there are several reels stacked together in a box. I have had like new prints damaged at the start of a reel because the Leader was not taped down.
2) If the storage box is shedding (leaving paper dust) due to age, either throw the box away or wrap the reels before shipping in it. Why? Because the dust is abrasive and causes scratches and "cinch marks".
3) Use a decent condition sturdy box for shipping and seal it securely. I have received some boxes that were in such poor condition I am lucky they arrived intact.
And while I have your attention:
* If the first several feet of a reel has old sticky adhesive residue, clean it off completely before projection. This will not only prevent damage from occurring; you certainly do not want sticky adhesive deposited inside your projector!
* Attach New Leader to the start of a reel before threading it through your projector. Since the majority of projectors automatically thread themselves, should something go wrong the Leader can simply be replaced if it becomes damaged.
* Don't use dirty reels! Clean them in the dishwasher. Often, old reels have mold spores from damp cardboard as well as dirt. This of course applies to plastic reels not metal.
