It dawned on me that there could be some collectors who collect silent films only. Are you out there? When you show silent films, do you have music playing, or maybe have pre-edited music for certain titles?

I like to keep it silent. The sound of the projector running is enough for me. That said, if i were to convert them to DVD i'd probably add some suitable music from that era.

I prefer the "sound" of a silent projector. [set5_b/set5_b/cheers2.gif]

I haven't been watching as many silents lately because I finally got around to building a real sound system and I enjoy the talkies even more.

This is actually kinda dumb on my part because I collected films on and off for over 20 years before I got a sound machine and I have some great silents (...including most of the films I've made.)

How can I gripe about repeats on screen when I'm ignoring about a quarter of my collection?

So I decided when a silent is on I'd just switch the stereo over to playing CDs.

I tried it. It works...sort of...

I find that the mood of the music alters the way I see the film and how I feel about what I am seeing.

I suppose emotionally neutral music would help, but what am I supposed to do: stand in an elevator with a tape recorder? Is there a CD somewhere called "Music for Intensive Care Wards"? Would it be bad if every 30 seconds a voice broke in saying "Your call is important to us. Please stay on the line."?

I guess the real plus here is the show can be different very time you see it.

<<raises hand. I still watch silent movies since most Ken Films horror and their Republic Pictures line of films were silent. Curse of Dracula, My Son the Vampire (THIS one is a real gem!) and The Black Widow and about 20 others were never produced in sound, so I watch occasionally. Same goes for Columbia Films: Revenge of Frankenstein and Curse of the Mummy's Tomb.

I think most of us get a smile when we run these since we all began with silents in 60's and 70's (for me). No music or me; just the hum of the projector. When I can remember to turn the volume knob or switch off to save sound head when running them on a sound projector is even more rewarding.
