My The Reel Image copy arrived today. I have only read Phil Sheards article so far. Very good read. In his article, Phil says he offered to purchase Derann's striper and other items, but his offer was refused. Instead they dumped some of it and scrapped the rest. I find this very disturbing news. For a business that was so admired for turning out new films, this puts a negative light on them. I know their lab equipment had been in need of repair for a few years, but why not sell it to someone who can continue making new prints, rather than scrap it??

I was not in the film collecting hobby when Derek Simmonds was running Derann, but I started about the time he passed away. I only heard wonderful words about this man. It appears the company may have turned away from their interest in films and more towards video along about that time.

That doesn't make any sense at all. One would surely have thought they would be glad that use could be made of it in the hobby.

Yes a few of us wept when we heard the news the non replaceable equipment was in fact weighed in for scrap. If we had the opportunity even my minute media empire would have been interested in collecting some of it for possible use here. It was bad enough news to hear they were folding but then also to hear what happened with the equipment and negatives was hard to get your head round. A sad end for a business which had sustained our hobby for many years I would say. Thankfully Phil Sheard of Classic Home Cinema has jumped to the fore and is already giving us notice of a new film collecting magazine which is generating much interest. Classic have strong commitment to film and they are constantly replenishing stock to keep us all happy.

Dan you missed something special not meeting Derek as he was a unique individual and a real showman. Watching David Guest at Blackpool recently he reminded me of Derek stood in a tie and fronting a professional event for more than happy visitors. Certainly as I get older I tend to reminisce more but its worth trying to turn this into action which is why many of us offered support to Mr Guest at sunny Blackpool.

Looking forward we are upbeat about the future of film collecting with Phil leading the way, David with Blackpool and fingers crossed Keith Wilton and his superb London event which is always a amazing day and has been so for many a year now. Well done to them all!

What became of the negatives?
