I was optimistic when I removed the film from the lab can...the old Kodachrome was flat and supple after resting for 8 years to the day in the chemical OLD Vitafilm soup.....did it, did it...WORK!!??? Wellllll...after a week of drying, sorry to say, STRIKEOUT...nosirreee..the film is NOT projectable on any of my machines. It's too severely warped and cupped. Shame, because the color looked fine and there was a spectacular building fire to start the reel. I will unspool it to see what else was on it as this looks like vintage 1930s stuff and I'm curious.

A couple of things I'd like to know or mention...once the film dried, did the vinegar odor return to it?

The fact that the film was still flexible when wet might indicate that a long soak in Vitafilm (NOT eight years though) might serve to allow badly warped film otherwise in unsalvageable condition to be projected "wet" and transferred to video or digital, when nothing else will help. (I've tried long soaks in Filmrenew and it doesn't do a damn thing in that regard.)

Yes, Jeff. The VS odor was there when the Vitafilm wore off. I also was thinking that the day I removed the reel from the can was probably its optimum moment if it was ever going through a projector. If you look back to my previous post on this "8-year soak" you will se a few snaps of the film wet and just out of the can--flat and supple. Dried, a week later, it's a mess. I will unspool it tomorrow, as I said, to view the content and to check each segment for the VS curling. There are several bits spliced together on the reel and I'm curious as to whether or not that all have VS, or did any of the segments survive unharmed.

Maybe a treatment of Filmguard and tight backwind for a couple days will allow projection.

The best material I've ever come across for treatment of warped film is LFP which Peter Goed in Australia used to market. I had an amazing result with this a few years back. 'Tis a pity he no longer manufactures it.
