What's with the almost prohibitive cost of shipping to the UK from the US lately, even for DVDs?

The guys I buy DVDs from have hit $10 per single DVD.

I just calculated 5 ounces in a package at $11.48 via First Class(the cheapest). In a large envelope $6.04.

I'm not sure how it works.

A dealer who I deal with a lot, now charges around $10 for the first disc, then $5 each thereafter. I've just bought three DVDs from a seller I trust totally and shipping is $17, so this is comparable to the first guy, just about.

Yet, I ordered a set of 5 DVDs from an Amazon affiliated seller in the US and shipping to the UK was only $2.15, total. Do Amazon affiliates get a special rate, perhaps?

Don't know if Amazon has a deal with the Postal Service, but that is entirely possible.

I have purchased items from China with very low shipping or free shipping.

I do not know why it costs so much to ship internationally now with the US Postal Service.
