People,

I want you all to try and cast the past few weeks and the whole Osi business out of your minds.

Prior to that whole thing, if any of you saw a print for sale with the words "Film is cored", can you tell me honestly what you would take that to mean? I'm particularly interested in the opinion of US members.

Please...can I have an opinion on this specific question even from those who didn't get involved in the recent controversy? I'd really appreciate it.

If I read a listing that states the film is cored then I think it means its on a plastic core. A round thing that film is wound on. Usually a split reel is needed to get them off the core (it helps) and to put them on the core.

I just asked my wife the same question. The only thing she has to do with films is watch them and is married to me. She said a cored film is a film on round plastic thingy. I showed her this:

" Film is cored, (which means that the film is not on a reel, but is wound and securely taped). "

She replied "what kind of crap is that"

If a film description states "cored", it means the film is on a core. A core being a small round plastic disc. [set5_b/set5_b/iagree.gif]

My only connection to film of any kind is through my better half - Dan L.

Even I, a mere novice, know that "cored" means the film has been wound around
a plastic spindle(for lack of a better word), and not on either a plastic or metal reel.
Normally a split reel is used to removed the film from the core, or to return the film
to the core.

I'll chime in for the record....

When I hear "the film is cored" I expect the film to be on a core, the round plastic hub that a split reel hooks onto. Certainly not just rolled up and taped.

I recently received an 800' 16mm split reel. I have never had one before and I have a stack of educational films that I have had for years that are cored....amazingly they all have cores in the center! I am looking forward to finally seeing what they are....I didn't want to try and mess with them without having a split reel first.

I have bought several cored ( 16mm ) film from honest american sellers. They all had labcores in the center.
Films on cores are OK to me if properly handled. I save shipping cost that way.

Does anyone know where to buy 8 mm cores and split reels ? I don`t.

Mats, click the Film/Equipment Sellers link above and then click on Urbanski Film. He sells 8mm split reels for $20. You use reel adapters to make them fit super 8.

I could not find any 8mm cores, but if you cut 16mm cores in half that would make 8mm.
