Has anyone ever seen prints of W.C. Fields' THE DENTIST with a completely different ending? I can recall seeing a version which ends with Fields in his office hearing ducks overhead and firing a rifle at the ceiling, causing a shower of plaster. Am I hallucinating?

Could it have been a 200' version as opposed to the 400'?

The duck scene is about a minute from the end of the short; the final scene, maybe 40 seconds long, has Fields intercepting his daughter and the ice man. Entirely possible the last few feet of the print you saw were damaged, etc and someone clipped the entire scene off and ended it with the duck "hunting".

Jeff, check for a splice at the end of the duck scene right before "The End".
