I just reviewed a digest copy of It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World I purchased from Indie 8 films. It's super 8 scope and on Kodak SP to boot. I projected it on an Elmo ST-1200 with a Singer scope lens. The image was very sharp and bright at 10 feet wide. The Sp color has held up well too. I would grade the color "good". At 2x400', it timed in at around 40 minutes. This was originally in Ultra Panavision and ran 192 minutes. This digest is packed with non-stop action. Superbly edited and very funny. A real crowd pleaser.

I agree it's a very good version. With the original being so episodic the editing works well. although after a couple of viewings I found at least one scene out of sequence. Not that it matters because as Dan says it is very funny. (pity they couldn't fit a part of the hospital ending the cut-down)

I did notice something in the continuity, but did not really take note. Which scene is out or order?

Hi Dan,
It's very brief and it took me quite a few viewings to notice.
There is an overhead short of vehicles racing along the highway. Pike is driving the pick-up truck taken from Ray & Irwin's garage. In the 8mm print this shot appears before the garage wrecking sequence where Pike steals the truck. It doesn't distract from what is a brilliant cut-down.

footnote: I bought my copy brand new when it first appeared on 8mm for £60.
A couple of years ago I had the dvd complete with intermission and play-out for £4 :!:
I love both versions.

-Agreed on what they did with the ending!

They cut out Ethel Merman barging into the room with her critical screechiness, slipping on a banana peel and falling on her butt!

Whenever I see that I think of my own mother-in-law, errr...fondly.

They say the "director's cut" of It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World was about 5 hours. I'd like to see that edition...maybe once!
