We went back to Emory University last Wednesday evening to see the 1946 color classic Leave Her To Heaven with Jean Tierney and Cornel Wilde. The cinematography was gorgeous! Before the show a professor gave a short talk describing the use of color to subliminally add to the moods of the story. She explained that Tierney would appear in a new scene wearing white, then during the progression of the scene change to reds and greens, while the other characters did not. Tierney's character worn the three primary colors of the color spectrum and would also wear white, being the combination of the three primary color. The theater was about 75% full and the movie was respected and enjoyed by all.

This is an excellent film. You're lucky to have caught a 35mm screening.
That thing with the colour changes - her dress (or whatever) would change colour within a scene? I never noticed that. Good reason to watch it again.

I haven't seen the film myself. The use of colors sounds like pure cinematography genius. I could never imagine a modern day mainstream director trying to pull anything like that off. I don't think that is taught in over-the-top-3-d-wild-effects-to-fill-seats-101-class.

Dan, is the screen curved? Just curious...The ceiling looks curved however the stage floor does not. :?:

Wayne, the screen was curved and so was Jean Tierney.

Dan, as I asked - were the dress changes within a scene? That seems like something women would spot and comment on immediately - these days anyway.

Yes, but the changes were necessary in reference to the story progression. i.e. Breakfast to bathing suite, then out of the pool to a poolside jacket.
