Post subject:  worn out focus remedy?

I have two EIKI SSL-0s that both have the same problem. The little rubber (or whatever it is) piece in the focus barrel that actually makes contact with and moves the lens in and out is worn out in both of them. So, I have to focus by hand at the moment. Since that piece, which I assume would normally hold the lens in place somewhat, is missing, it goes out of focus very easily.

I'd appreciate hearing some cheap and easy remedies for this. What works best in a pinch to replace?

I used windshield washer hose available from any auto store. It's just the right diameter to fit nice and tight on the spindle there.

David,
This is an ongoing problem with Eiki focus knobs. Mike is correct: remove the focus knob spindle and clean off the goo. I use Naptha (lighter fluid) for projector cleaning and it does a good job removing the deteriorated rubber. Then select from a convenient array of tubes to cut and put on your cleaned spindle: windshield washer hose as Mike suggests, aquarium hosing, fuel line hosing, etc. I took my focus spindle into the store and matched it up with some aquarium hosing. Problem solved.

Looks like we've all dealt with the tubing fix. I found using tubing that has ribbing lengthwise works well.

thanks for the tips! i did a quick fix with some electrical tape rolled thickly around it, in time for an outdoor screening at my house on Saturday, but will be making a trip to get some aquarium tubing this week!

If you have a Do-It Center nearby, they have micro fuel line hose that works fine on the focus knobs.
It's 1/4"OD x 7/64"ID. It has a stock number of 048643-125742. It's $2.49 a foot.

I just did another Eiki focus knob repair. I wound two turns of black electrical tape then, I slide on a 3/4" length of quarter inch tubing that came form the auto parts store. It works great! Only thing is, when I adjust the focus a stream of water washes the lens. [set5_b/set5_b/sifone.gif]
