I have found out there were some different phototubes you can simply swap out for your existing phototubes to playback "blue track" prints or modern cyan dye (no silver) soundtracks.

Use these tubes instead:

5581 directly replaces type 930.

5582 directly replaces type 921.

5583 directly replaces type 927 and type CE-25.

5584 directly replaces type 920 for push-pull tracks or optical stereo tracks (35mm soundheads).

How many years before the cinemas started going digital, did they introduce these Cyan soundtracks.

Mid 1990s I believe.

At first they started switching to "High Magenta" soundtracks before they actually switched to full cyan dye soundtracks for all new (at the time) 35mm release prints. Theaters had to install new soundtrack reading hardware (called reverse scan) with red LED light sources. Those that could not afford the expensive technician installed reverse scan readers could instead buy a special red light "exciter" lamp called a Jax-Lite (made by Ultra Stereo Labs) which could be installed by the theaters' projectionist.
