Has anyone come across an old print with small holes punched into some of the frames?, I have seen it on at least two films. I think one has 3 holes punched in a row. Wondered what the purpose was. The films have the usual cue marks.

I have hundreds of 16mm prints, but have never seen punched holes on the film. Mysterious!

Afterwards, I did a bit of searching around the internet, and found that some TV stations had done this, even though the film had cue marks, It was to show where adverts were to be inserted. There was a report online, I think in an issue of Variety in 1954. A company named Guild Pictures were complaining about the damage to their prints by projectionists punching holes in the print, and they were offering to insert the adverts free of charge.

Thank you for that info Robert. Most features in my collection are scandinavian prints. Advertising was not allowed in the good old days. We had no commercial TV stations here :D

Of course, different TV stations had different cue marks. So, you may find a print which has multiple types of cue, including the holes you mention, Robert.
I have an original TV print of THE COCOANUTS which looks like a firework display coming up to some of the reel changes.
:-)

[set5_b/set5_b/iagree.gif] I have had a few prints just like what Mick describes. I will credit that to station manager arrogance and being too good to use another station manager's cue marks. [set5_b/set5_b/banghead.gif]

I don't know if it's "station manager arrogance" so much as individual film editor's capriciousness. Station managers as a rule never touch film; they're too busy backslapping (or bs-ing for short) car dealers at the Rotary Club in search of ad clients.

Feature prints that circulated from station to station were often re-edited differently at each one; the editor would decide "the commercial goes HERE" and mark the print accordingly, then after broadcast would replace the cut-out segments and ship the print to the next station. The next guy might decide different scenes needed to be cut, and he'd mark it his way. (The prints would also be "slugged" with lengths of leader and sometimes metal cueing strips to allow change-over to the commercials on another machine, these would be removed then too. Usually, that is...)

Marks would also vary widely; some stations used a scriber that left a circular mark similar to the "cigarette burn" cue marks on theatrical prints. Others used a punch as you mentioned; some sloppy editors would just scratch an X into part of the frame, or mark it with a glob of grease pencil or felt tip marker.
