I just saw this posted on another forum:

http://shop.van-eck.net/PP-0051.html?_g ... ch=PP-0051

New production of the Bell & Howell part number 09784 Worm Gear Only for projectors with a still picture function. This is the gear only and you have to transfer several parts from your old gear to this gear. Previously, this gear was only available as "new-old-stock". Once all the parts are transfered from the old gear to the new gear it becomes a complete # 09709 Worm Gear Assembly.

This is not the same worm gear as # 012666 which is for projectors without still picture function. 012666 has been reproduced for some time now and is widely available from the usual Bell & Howell parts suppliers.

Greetings Ken
Ive seen this too
I checked the prices and shipping back to the USA. OUCH!!
I replaced many worm gears but now at that cost for the remakes
Ill have too rase my prices I tryed to keep them down but now ?
They just might be a boat anchor or disconnect all the other parts for still picture function.
And use # 012666 But that might be a little costly too.
I already have the 015533 Lower Sprocket Gear 1580/2580 Made and that was a costly thing
Just to keep this hobby going

Yeh, that price is kinda high to get the gear to the USA.

Perhaps the only thing to do is to remove all the still picture parts and convert to using the non-still picture 012666 worm gear instead. The # 012666 worm gear has been reproduced for some time now and is available at many B&H parts dealers.

Hi,

I have a clarification to make about this gear. This worm gear is complete and does not require parts from the old gear to be placed on the new one.

With the new 3D printing techniques we have made a new design in one part!

About the shipping costs to the USA. The problem is that this gear does not fit in an envelop, so the shipping costs for an individual gear are a bit high. However if someone in the USA is interested in becomming a reseller for this, we can tackle this issue.

What is the cost to ship this gear to the USA?

The pictures on your website only show the bare gear not a fully assembled one. Does this mean your gear also includes these parts:

31081 Retainer, Shuttle Interlock (made of hardened steel)
30163 Screw, Interlock Retainer
31083 Setscrew
31052 Banc-Lok

Also I spotted a discrepancy in the description that needs to be corrected:

Bell & Howell - Worm Gears (16mm, for 500-2500 series) - PP-0051 (new)

B&H product nummer: 09784 (should also include number 09709 for the complete gear assembly)
with still-function

A common problem with the 16mm Bell & Howell projectors is that in the original worm gears, can have rips.
This new worm gear is made of Improved long life black plastic for uptimal durability.

After assembly in projector, lubricate well with e.g. Molykote G-4500

color: white
material: massive nylon

size: 30 x 37 mm
weight: 23 grams

A couple of miss-spellings and a discrepancy in the color. What color is this gear, black or white?

Not being familiar with the 3D printing materials available, and not wanting to knock the supplier, I do have some concerns.

For one, 3D printing has only been available to the mass public a short time -- how much do we know of the material being used, as to how it will hold up over time?

Also, has this gear been actually been tested in a B&H projector, and been run for many hours to show 'real world' testing for long term duration under heat and cooling cycles?

Let's be honest here, the wormgear is the most involved piece to replace, along with a ton of special alignments to then be done after. This isn't a 1-2-3 type repair job. And I would personally explode if I bought one of these, repaired the projector (or in my case, had someone do it professionally), and then find out in 6-12 months (or even a year or two later) it failed due to not being able to handle the stress of heat and cooldown (for example). That's a LOT of money pissed away for the repair, for a short time of it working.

I'm not trying to accuse the person manufacturing these of anything, but I am suggesting that before people start buying them, to know firsthand how long real world testing has been done. It's known full well that the current grey wormgears do NOT fail like the original white ones did, and there are countless examples being used to back this up. I realize the current ones don't allow still function, but they are in many machines over many years with no issues.

I'd rather have a projector lose the still function knowing that the worm gear in there won't fail, or just buy a different brand of projector altogether for a still function if I needed it. Again, if this new gear fails, it's not a simple replacement to redo.

Anyone else agree?

Not only heating and cooling cycles need to be taken into account, but also the greases used on the gear. Have any aging or longevity tests been performed?

How close are the tolerances? Motion picture equipment uses parts that are machined to very close tolerances. Remember, the slightest "play" in a particular part can be magnified thousands of times in the picture on the screen.

As mentioned earlier, the # 012666 (non-still) reproduction gear has proven itself to last. How about this new still picture one?
