Ken, I beg to differ. If you look closely at his photo, you can see clear demarcations in the sound where both halves are in phase. But on that subject: can you post a scan for us of a few frames from that trailer? That would be interesting to see.

I have no authoritative reason to suspect this, but wonder if the lab simply had a bad day. Or if it's a direct reduction from a 35mm sound negative and they optically doubled it to better fit 16mm proportions and just didn't align it well.

Anyway, never seen that in 16mm myself.

Well, I just found I have another print with this dual variable density soundtrack, I noticed it while lubricating. 'The Masked Pirate' (aka The Pirates of Capri' 1950.
