Hello Bill,
I posted those pictures because I thought they were very good at showing you how it works. I have a Perf-fix machine, which is the second set of pictures. This is not my machine, I just found the photos to help you.

I used to use a quick dying cleaner/lubricant made in England named 2.22, now no longer made as the inventor died. It was recommended that you made splices (tape) before using it, instead of after, as it could affect adhesion. I have never had any problems with tape splices, or glue oozing out after treatment, and some of these are 42 years old.

If you do manage to get hold of a machine, the instruction manual is available online.
