I have a few Castle films that are on unidentifiable stock; neither Eastman/Kodak nor DuPont. The edges are marked either just --SAFETY-- or --A.B. SAFETY--. The only thing I can think of off hand about the latter one is possibly Ansco Binghamton? Any film stock mavens out there who might recognize this stuff?

Fuji also made safety stock in 16mm. Ansico is a good guess but when it comes to second party printing houses I think they pretty much used whatever they could get their hands on at the time. I have several cartoons in 16mm with absolytly no lettering on the sprockets in every sort of color state. Faded, perfect, I would say it varies but I have no color code on the sprocket side to identify. I will say that from experience that both Fuji and Kodak are the most stable 16mm B&W stocks. Castle used mainly Kodak stock in the early years but may have changed suppliers later on. I have not seen a Castle film using anything different. Also Kodak went through many transitions on the business market that may have changed the printing. All of my early Castle films are on Kodak B&H film. There are some later cartoons on Agfa that you may want to look into.

They're black and white.

I've never come across this stock, Jeff, and I've spoken to a fellow collector who's well versed in film stocks and hasn't seen it before. I'm interested though.

1. Is it at all possible that you might be misreading something on there?

2. Do you know whether these are original Castle prints or Dupes?

3. What era are these from - the titles might help?

Thanks

Thanks for your interest. They are definitely originals, a couple are sound (a music album and a W.C. Fields comedy), one is silent (an A & C headliner). They're 1950's era releases, which made me consider Ansco as a possibility. I know Castle rarely used anything other than Eastman and occasionally DuPont; though I do in fact have an 8mm Castle travelogue (w/original box) that is on b/w Fuji stock. And I've been quite careful about reading the edge markings. Hey, what would this hobby be like without a few mysteries?

Thanks.

I realise that you'd probably have already said if it was the case but does the word SAFETY have a dot between any of the letters?

Nope...The markings are extremely small and at the very edge of the film stock above the sprocket area; rather than among the sprocket area as was typical of Kodak or DuPont film of the time. The placement and size are similar to where Ferrania (later 3M) placed their edge marks.

Interesting. Well, hopefully someone will come along who recognises it.

Have you had any more luck with this, Jeff?
I've asked a few people about it but nobody seems to have come across it before.

Not yet... I'm trying to recall if I've ever run into Castle prints on Gevaert or Ferrania stock; I'm not sure. Anyway, their edges were usually pretty well marked, "GEVAERT BELGIUM" or later "AGFA GEVAERT" after they were merged into Agfa; and "FERRANIA SAFETY" or "3M SAFETY" after Minnesota Mining & Mfg. took them over. I've run into Gevaert and Ferrania more often on dupes or on 8mm toy-projector films like Atlas, Coast, Carnival, or Brumberger.
