I have an old 16mm Official Films musical reel with a truly strange problem. The film is so warped that it twists around about twice per 18 inches. That is to say, if I am pulling it off the reel base down, it will twist till the base is facing me, then back, so the end in my hand is base down again.

The film stock is not brittle; in fact can be folded without breaking, and NO vinegar odor. It will run OK on my Kalart Victor (though it does the hula;) I've never tried it on my B & H autoload but probably should. Have treated it with both Filmrenew and Vitafilm and have tried winding it counterclockwise, on a large hub reel, but nothing helps the "wave."

There's probably no cure for it, but anyone know how the [set5_b/set5_b/reddevil.gif] it ever got this way in the first place?

The film will twist from drying/dry storage over the years. Filmrenew won't do anything for a warp/curl. Peter Goed used to make LFP which would help relax film, I don't think he makes it any longer. You can use pure camphor in the can you store it in, but keep in mind that will take years from the way you describe it.

There is an alternative...expect a PM soon.

I was going to mention Peter's LFP. You're correct in saying that Peter doesn't make it anymore. However, there may be some collectors who have some they could pass on to Jeff.
However, my experience is that this kind of benign curl is harmless, as long as the film projects and takes up OK.

I came into a small supply of LFP earlier this year and, now that I've tried it and seen the results, am sorry it's no longer going to be made. It really works.

Smells better than camphor, too.

Myself & mostly another board user have been fiddling around with our own solution similar to LFP. So far so good...

MIKE, I know you know the LFP quite well. Would you be interested in trying a knockoff version?

This is a drying problem and not really associated with vinigar syndrome. Just a dry film. The film may still run fine but if you watch carefully, running a dry, curled film may drag the soundtrack into the main image. Have that same problem with a couple military theatrical films. The sprocket side of the film stays in line but the right side of the projected image sometimes pulls into the image area of badly dry films. Also throws off the sound depending on the soundtrack. Single mono tracks are greatly affected where Multi track or variable are less affected. Not sure if there is a 'cure' but there are some treatments you can use. Filmguard doesn't help although I am very attatched to the product. It is mainly for well running films and does clean off some of the vinigar to an older print. Doesn't correct the problem though.

I have had this problem too. I applied Filmguard using hand rewinds. After applying Filmguard make sure the film is wound tight and taped. Let is sit vertically for a several months, then give it a try.
