Schoolcraft,

I've searched and can't find anyone who posted on here that they think that magnetic sound was the norm on 16mm prints. Can you link me to where they've posted?

Sorry. I really am trying to give you the benefit of the doubt regarding your recent posts here, but, I just can't seem to find any of the stuff you've posted about, regarding the mag prints, your Eiki slotload and the bashing I gave you over it, my saying that optical 16mm prints didn't exist (your best one, BTW  ), etc.
At least try to help me out.

Just a little sidelight on the use of magnetic track 16mm... Most 16mm "split reels" are probably made of aluminum because it cannot become magnetized and thus damage a mag track. Reels of this type were mainly used by TV stations (news footage again) and labs; where the use of mag sound material was an everyday thing.

Just by the dumbest of luck, a batch of projection reels I acquired from a friend a couple years ago included a regular 1200' Goldberg reel also made of aluminum! The aluminum reels were left unpainted to distinguish them from the usual steel ones, so they are shiny and very attractive as film-room decor even if you don't use them. No idea how common (or not) they might be. I assume that plastic reels eventually took their place.

I believe some other older reels like Kodascopes were also aluminum, though it had nothing to do with mag sound. War time aluminum shortages probably put an end to those (and may also have been responsible for those awful pressboard reels...)

Umm okay. To Jeff, I've used aluminum reels in every format and have found they cannot be magnetically affected in any way. I use steel, aluminum and plastic reels and I've never had a problem with any reels affecting any type of soundtracks.
My argument is that magnetic soundtracks aren't the norm with 16mm school or theatrical Canadian or American prints. Had an argument in this forum with a one-time poster that he found a magnetic head and thought everyone wanted it in 16mm. Of course my posts were deleted for the Ebay market but I wanted to point out that collectors of 16mm are looking mainly for the optical prints and mag never cought on and was never used in the theatrical market.

Erik, what are you talking about??? What one time poster? Which of your posts are you referring to?

The only post of yours that was deleted was when you complained about the Eumig dual 8 projector that you bought from John Capazzo. In fact, that is the only time I have deleted a post on the forum. The only other time posts were deleted, was when a member deleted his own posts(17) and now that member cannot post here. [set5_b/set5_b/banghead.gif]

I'm not even really sure how all the controversy started in the first place. [set5_b/set5_b/boxing_smiley.gif] Anyway, it appears the ebay photos of that dual-system Siemens monster have been taken down, but I've found another even more extensive set of pix, showing the "works" from both sides. So if anyone still wants a look, here 'tis...

What Erik don't know can't hurt him... (And no, I'd never pretend this is the norm, but not to say "there ain't no such animal" either.)

I wish I had that little unit when I had stacks of 16mm MAG tracks to listen to. I had to use my pedestal machine to hear what was on them.

And for Christmas, what does my son from Vermont grace me with??? Well, among other stuff, he gives me an Elmo 16 CL (never had one) AND a Bell & Howell Filmosound 302--yes, the optical/ MAGNETIC version in person.
