Erik, it is solid state. I checked the voltage going to the exiter and there was none.

Hey Dan, if it is solid state then do you have a meter that can check a transister? Most likely the current sent to the lamp is coming off a transister meant for converting AC current to low-voltage DC current. Like a rectifier circuit.

Have you checked the resistors with a multimeter? If they check the correct value then on to the capacitors. I have ran into something similar while restoring a tube tester.

Mike is going a bit too far into the circuit. A solid state amplifier directs current directly from the power transister to the speaker. If there is a break in the amplifying transister then that is where the problem may lie. What Mike is talking about is power provided to the amplifying transister. Resisters especially if old tend to hold back more and more resistance over time since they are carbon based. I'd check the sine waves produced by the transister first then look for a broken or what we call 'slaved' resister. Man I sound like a geek.

Dan, Did you ever get the exciter power supply fixed?

I had to do a fix on my NAVY issued Viewlux. The only problem was that the exciter lamp wasn't turning on. The projector has a wonderfully working tube amp but the lamp wasn't lighting up. Out of desperation I shined a laser pointer through the cat-eye and the sound came on brilliantly. Was probably a broken wire to the exciter lamp but the wires were so enclosed to the frame of the projector that I couldn't replace them. Stated before that I ended up replacing the exciter lamp with a high-brightness LED lamp blowing directly into the cat-eye and now the projector works wonders even though it shows a small image and uses a heck of a lot of power. The exciter lamp was supposed to be powered by a run-off of one of the 6L6 power tubes but wasn't recieving power. Now the LED is run off of a 1.5v battery holder with a small switch.

Ah, you won't need the exciter lamp, Dan. Everybody knows the vast majority of 16mm prints were released with Magnetic sound.

And again Mike provides an idiots view on a subject he has no idea of. Nice that Facebook lurkers can post anywhere. Wait for it...
