In the face of all the new technology, film is still going strong. I really think the advent of the internet has been the most important catalyst contributing to it's longevity. Do people ever gather for a DVD projection party?

Honestly, this recession has made this hobby easier. I've bought equiptment and films for waaay less then was on the market just a few years ago. My audience of friends are all older and want to watch the older films. 3-Stooges, classic films, early silents. They aren't available on DVD. Also there's a huge difference in watching a film then watching a video on a big screen. Maybe we are the oldies but watching a film greatly outweighs watching even an HD presentation especially on a 12 foot screen. Digital shows it's limits when film invites people in.

You are absolutely right. Before internet it wasn´t easy to collect, since video killed the reelfilm business.
I bought my first films in the early 60´s. It was a great fun as more and more titles were made available until ca 1980.
Then my collecting fell asleep, but I still kept my collection.

Cheers

DVD´s and Blueray´s are great inventions but I miss the sound of a real projektor [set5_b/set5_b/iagree.gif]

Well after running through all my old 8&S8mm home movies and then spending hours of reading what is avaible, movie night just got a whole lot better. Being older but not quite a senior citizen I just may take down my 8 track from the shelf, jump start it with a 12v battery pop in a cartrage of songs for ambience and run a B&W frankenstein movie.
Yes I stiil like my PVR and DVD but setting up a projector and watching an old movie, well I think I'm going to like this hobbie.

More to read....

We actually have hosted a couple of DVD projection parties. Since the video projector was on loan, and we don't have one, this isn't otherwise an option for us. But it goes to show that under the right circumstances, creating an event means you're bringing people together for a fun and social occasion, and the format doesn't have to be film for that to be a success. Having said that, those occasions were the exception, and the rule is film. And classic film was meant to be seen with a CROWD! Regardless of the format, give people something they don't get otherwise - an enjoyable experience with other people seeing something they wouldn't typically see - and you have a recipe for success.

And yes, I think it's really, really cool this hobby is still kickin'!
